If you are a homeowner, and you are looking to renovate your bathroom, you’re probably curious about what kinds of supplies you might be in need of. Depending on what kind of renovations you are interested in performing, you could need quite a bit. But, if you are only changing out a sink, then you can usually do the job with only a few tools and supplies.
Most of the sinks that you buy will not come with any hardware. However, there are some complete kits that you can purchase that will include everything you need in order to replace your existing sink with a new one.
The first thing you will need to look into is the style of sink you are going to be installing. There are as many different kinds of sinks as there are homeowners, and finding the perfect one is something you should take plenty of time in choosing. If you are getting an above counter style sink, you will need to purchase extra pipe to add to the trap, or “S” curve, under the counter as the traditional trap will not be long enough to reach.
You will also need to make sure you have plumbers putty or pipe dope to seal off any connections that you have to make.
You should make sure that your faucet will fit into the sink as well. Some sinks come with three holes and some come with only one large hole. The single holed sinks will require the push/pull faucet whereas the tripled holed sink requires you to use the standard two knob faucets.
You will need to make sure that you have all the rubber gaskets that will be required to correctly install the faucet and the drain as well. Without these gaskets your sink will more than likely start to leak the very first time you use it.
As far as tools go, you really will only need a pipe wrench. These wrenches are adjustable so they can fit a variety of pipe connections. They are also known as “Monkey Wrenches” since they are so simple to use even a monkey can use one. Being able to do this on your own will save a lot of money.
